PROJECT SAFE PLACE

What is Safe Place?

Safe Place is for kids and teens in trouble. Not the kind of trouble like you did something wrong! We mean the kind of trouble that would make you want to ask for help.

There are many reasons why someone would want to ask for help. What are some of the reasons you can think of that someone might want to ask for help?

Select any of the following situations you think someone could use Safe Place for help:

1. Someone who ran away from home.
2. Parents argue/fight and are violent at home.
3. Someone who gets picked on or has no friends.
4. Someone who is in a gang, lives near a gang, or is a gang wannabe.
5. Someone who was followed or hassled by a person they did not know.
6. Someone who has a problem they feel they cannot talk to anyone about.
7. A person who got kicked out of their house.
8. Someone who has to stay on the streets overnight.
9. A person who has problems with drugs.

WHERE ARE SAFE PLACES?

Anywhere you see this yellow and black Safe Place sign you can ask for help.

Schools, community centers, 7/11 stores, Round Table Pizza, Armadillo Willy's, Safeway stores, Taco Bell, fire stations and on ALL buses and light rails.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU NEED A SAFE PLACE

Go in and ask for help if you are in trouble. Say, "I need a safe place" and an employee will call Bill Wilson Center to come to talk to you.

a) You don't have to tell the employee at the Safe Place what's wrong; you just have to ask for help.
b) You can change your mind at any time. No one will make you stay.
c) What you talk about with a Safe Place counselor is confidential.
d) You can get help 24 hours a day by calling collect 243-0222 if a Safe Place is not available.
e) It doesn't cost anything to use Safe Place.
f) You can stay at the Bill Wilson Center shelter overnight if you don't feel safe going home.
g) Don't forget that buses and light rails are Safe Places. If you need help, you can get on a bus anytime and tell the driver you need a Safe Place. The bus driver will call someone to come pick you up and bring you to Bill Wilson Center.
